Virtual tabletops (vTT) have been around for a few years now,
Among them are
Roll20
Fantasy Grounds
D&D Beyond
And, of course, Dungeons & Dragons Online, among many others out there.
The 5e D&D game I’m currently uses Fantasy Grounds. It’s been a learning curve in many ways, not the least of which is managing the screen real estate. I’m slowly getting comfortable with the controls, but for this old gal, it’s not easy.
My Dragonquest game currently doesn’t use an actual vTT; we generally do a conference call, and email/text anything that needs to be actually looked at as needed. For the most part, it works, but we miss seeing each other, even if just a face. Our next DQ session will probably include Microsoft Teams or ZOOM in place the conference call.
Our group is gearing up to shift GMs, and the next campaign will be back to GURPS 4th edition. Stuart, who will take over GM duties wants to use Battlegrounds: RPG Edition (aka BRPG) in conjunction with Teams. So we’ll be checking that out.
As we move back to GURPS, we’ll also be using GURPS Character Assistant, developed by Armin Sykes for Steve Jackson Games. Actually, Armin developed GCA a long time before it became an official SJ Games product; I’ve been using it myself since version 1, he’s currently working on GCA version 5, but it’s slow going as he still has to work a regular job as well.
Sometime in the not-too-distant future, I’ll do some reviews of the vTT’s I’ve mentioned above.
