Welcome to the DragonQuest Frontiers!

Posted on 18 August 2020 by weregamer11 November 2021

This website is dedicated to the Role-Playing Game Known as DragonQuest (DQ), and originally published by SPI, Inc. In my opinion, DQ was (and remains) one of the premier fantasy RPGs ever developed.

Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) was an American publisher of board wargames and related magazines, particularly its flagship Strategy & Tactics, in the 1970s and early 1980s. It produced an enormous number of games and introduced innovative practices, changing the course of the wargaming hobby in many areas.

Unfortunately, SPI ran out of cash, and its assests were obtained by TSR, the makers of Dungeons and Dragons, who had made a loan to SPI which was guaranteed by said assets, and then subsequently held by Wizards of the Coast, and now Hasbro, and it has been out of production for many years – so many years, in fact, that Hasbro/WotC allowed the registered trademark to lapse.

Even so, DQ has a large and faithful following. Thus, a need for this web site. Over the years, many people have created a wealth of original material for use with the DragonQuest game. On this site, I hope to present some of that information, along with any I can gather from other DQ players around the world.

As long as there are those still playing DQ and creating new support material for the game, it won’t die. I invite everyone to submit material to this site and/or comment on what’s already here. Just send email to dragonquest@dragonquestfrontiers.com.

A word or forty about this domain.

The original DragonQuestFrontiers.com site registration by Tom Miller lapsed several years ago, and the domain name was then hijacked for some time. A couple of years ago, I was able to purchase the domain name, and am working to recover content formerly hosted on the site (thank you Internet Archive!) Tom put an amazing amount of work into the site, and I am pleased to be able to offer his work (with his permission) to the world of Dragonquest fans once again. His campaign setting of Arenas should be up before much longer.

This is a work in progress, which will take many weeks months, if not years, to fully accomplish. In addition, I plan to convert many of the static HTML page to the WordPress CMS, which will hopefully make for a more stable presentation than pages downloaded from the Internet Archive. I may attempt to make some of the Dragonquest rulesets available in a context usable by the various online platforms such as Fantasy Grounds or Roll20, net – but that’s a way in the future, and more of a learning curve than I am up to at the moment; anyone wishing to assist, please step forward.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to leave them. DQ is a great game, and the gaming group to which I and my spouse have belonged for over 30 years returns to it with great regularity (along with GURPS and other systems.) I have a gaming blog of my own for that group, located at http://www.lookingbackwards.net/weregaming/, and have been a member of the DragonQuest Players Association for several years.

Thanks for visiting, look around, sit a spell, read a bit.
